ElectroChemistry 4

⇛Electrodes :
We discussed that there are two types of electrodes
Anode and Cathode .
Based on reactivity , electrodes are classified into Inert and Active electrodes .

1. Inert :
The electrodes which do not take part in the main electrolysis reaction are called as inert electrodes .
Eg: Pt(Platinum) , Au(Gold) etc.

2. Active :
The electrodes which take part in the electrolysis reaction are known as active electrodes .
Eg: Hg(Mercury) , Ni(Nickel) , Cu(Copper) etc.

~ at Anode :-

A-n A + ne- ⇒This process is known as oxidation or de-electronation

~ at Cathode :- M+n + ne- M ⇒This process is known as reduction or electronation

⟶ When a solution contains more than one type of ions (cation, anions) , the ion with lower discharge potential will deposit first .

Decreasing order of discharge potential

Anions:

F- > PO4-3 > SO4-2 > NO3- > OH- > Cl- > Br- > I- > CO3-2

Cations : ↠ Li+ > K+ > Na+ > Ca+ > Mg+2 > Al+3 > Mn+2 > Zn+2 > Cr+3 > Fe+2 > H+ > Cu+2 > Hg+2 > Ag+ > Pt+2 > Au+3
